FET statement on recent legal case

28th March 2023

Family Education Trust (FET) wishes to acknowledge that legal action had been initiated against the organisation, which on Friday 24th March 2023 was dismissed following a successful summary judgement application in the Royal Courts of Justice. This action related to an FET communication in October 2022 on Twitter, which was posted for no more than 40 minutes before, upon reflection, being deleted by FET.

The Court decided that there was no realistic prospect that serious harm could be demonstrated as a result of that communication, and therefore that the legal action should not proceed further. The Court went on to order that a significant portion of the legal costs incurred by FET should be borne by the claimant.

FET is a national educational trust that researches the causes and consequences of family breakdown, giving time and attention to a wide range of areas that affect the stability of the family and the welfare of children and young people. FET uses evidence-based research for the purposes of informing, educating, influencing and supporting those who are interested and engaged in a broad range of family-related issues. In recent years there has been strong debate about matters of sexuality that has come under greater influence from gender ideology, which evidence increasingly indicates is not conducive to the stability of the family and welfare of children and young people.

FET communicates its research, findings and policy conclusions in a number of ways, ranging from periodic bulletins, books and reports to the use of social media. We recognise that, in often heated discussions, our objectives are best served through clear, fact-based messaging. We believe it to be essential that FET is deeply engaged in such debates, whose outcomes will affect everyone in our society today and indeed generations to come, using its voice to influence public policy in the light of its research.
