Today we wrote to the Conservative Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris to urge the Conservative Party to take action against Crispin Blunt MP, who made outrageous comments defending the convicted sex offender Imran Ahmad Khan MP.
Mr Khan has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy after forcing him to drink gin at a party 14 years ago.
We are appalled that Crispin Blunt, a senior Conservative MP, should not only call the conviction a “dreadful miscarriage of justice” but today defend his comments. The damage this has done to victims of sexual abuse is untold, as many will be thinking it won’t be worth going to the police or giving evidence in court as they won’t be believed.
The fact that Mr Blunt, a former justice minister, is effectively discrediting the judge and jury system who heard the evidence, sends the message that victims of rape and sexual abuse should keep quiet as powerful men are more concerned about their own interests than those of abused children. We are calling on the Conservatives to sanction Crispin Blunt and restore public confidence that the Government cares about the safety of children.
